The Lies That Bind

Read this in one night attempting to figure out how either the author or the editors were going to justify creating a poorly written, silly, drama-filled fictional romance with 9/11 as a central plot point. Nope. We aren't ready. 9/11 is not for your personal gain.

I love Emily, but not so much this book

3 ⭐️⭐️⭐️

“I began to learn that the world treats you the way you demand to be treated”.

Cecily is an immature liar! I know the title of the book warns me that it's the LIES THAT BIND, but OMG it was lie/ bad decisions and more lies/ bad decisions! I know technically she did nothing wrong ******* spoiler******* she didn't know he was married, but once she did why... Why... Why did she have to befriend the wife!

From the moment Matthew and Cecily got back together I kept thinking “Just tell him, its not so bad yer that he wouldn't understand”... But the longer she put it off and the more she omitted telling the truth, well let's just say I don't blame Matt for his decision!

3/5. Would recommend it if your looking for a quick read with an insufferable protagonist and a love web that rivals most Spanish telenovelas!

It’s hard to write a review for this book for multiple reasons, one being the incredible plot twists that I am purposefully not going to touch on in said review lest I ruin the fun, and the other being the dynamic relationships that I also am hesitant to touch on since even talking about those could give the story away. (Whew that was a mouthful.) So here is my review, in all its glory, condensed greatly in an effort to not ruin a beautiful story that you need to read.

Cecily and Matthew broke up after Matthew couldn’t commit to her after years of dating. Soon after, she met Grant at a NY bar, and their connection was immediate and intense- nothing like she had ever experienced before. She and Grant began a whirlwind romance up until the tragedies of 9/11/2001, when Grant went missing. She found a missing persons flyer with his face on it days later, and began to realize that he might not have been who she thought he was...

This was such a compelling love story/mystery. Giffin created such dynamic relationships, and in those explored the intricacies of passion versus familiarity, intense love versus safety. Whatever your opinions of what genuine love looks like, this book will capture your heart and make it incredibly happy when you close the last page. Perfect when paired with a warm afternoon on the couch, the windows cracked open, a freshly baked cookie (maybe 2), and cozy pjs that you’re wearing all day, every day. 4.6 ⭐️

DID NOT FINISH: 10%

Moving too slow and I don’t really care for or connect to the characters

Emily Giffin is a favorite author of mine, so I was not surprised that I read this book in a matter of hours. I love that this story is not an idealized or romanticized story of love and life, rather one that portrays all the ugly bits and features a strong woman who refused to put her worth in her relationships and takes ownership and responsibility over her choices.

I just finished reading this book and I am so torn by how I feel about it . It was so engaging to read but I was baffled by the ending/some of the events that happened and the behavior of some characters. I’m not giving it 4.5 stars because I think it’s so amazing, I’m giving it 4.5 stars because it kept me very interested and has certainly made me think.
