It feels like a “light” horror fic, but even then, the ending was a little too silly to wrap up the heavier horror elements for me.

DID NOT FINISH: 41%

I just dont think Grady Hendrix' writing style is for me. I finished one of his other books and thought is was just okay and this was feeling super super similar. Disappointing because everything about it should make it like my perfect book but it unfortunately didn't work for me.

*I also feel a little weird about the fact that a male author keeps writing books from an entirely female perspective. I can't pinpoint exactly why, but I kept suddenly remembering that fact while reading. Just felt a bit off at points.

Loved the ending - there were a few parts that confused me, where the writing didn’t make it clear there had been a small time jump, but overall a lot of fun

I am a fan of the mix of horror and humor that Grady Hendrix is often able to inject into his novels. I feel that this is one of the best examples of his work. The 1980s nostalgia runs rampant through the book and creates a great backdrop and atmosphere to the plot, fully drawing on the Satanic Panic of the era. The characters are typical upper class 80s teens and that is played to full effect as one of them ends up possessed. The book does become more tense as this possession becomes more obvious and there is good pacing. In addition, to the tense moments, it is also a book about growing up and changing friendships, actually slightly more heartfelt than I was expecting.

A decent read but it fell a bit flat for me. I felt like the narration style held us at arm's length so it was hard to connect with the characters and really care about what was happening. Instead, it felt more like I was watching a train wreck happen in slow motion. It straddles the line of being an allegory for change and coming-of-age in teenagers while also trying to be a horror story with demonic possession, but I feel like that held it back from being a better read. I think I would have preferred if it leaned a little more heavily in one direction and gave us more substance.
