I wanted to read this book since it was a follow-uo to Brooklyn, a book I listened to as audiobook and really liked without being able to put my finger on why. I felt very similarly when reading this at first, and I, quite literally, felt like I could not put the book down. I think what makes this book so amazingly great, is how real it all feels.

Colm Tóibín manages to write not the highpoint of fine literature, but a story that you can immerse yourself in fully and completely. I thought that Long Island was even better than Brooklyn, though I feel like I will have to actually read Brooklyn at some point to make that decision fully.

I think overall the theme encapsulates how difficult the flow of life can be, how our decisions are never straightforward, and how often in life choices are difficult to actually make completely on your own. It's a beautifully reflective idea, which I think Colm again has managed to portray brilliantly in the life of immigrants, and in this case those who stayed.

Slow start but ended up wanting more. Characters really grew on me and appreciated their individual perspectives.
The ending felt almost unfinished but leaving it open to our own imaginations i guess?

Also didn’t know this was a sequel (oops) so I wonder if there will be another one to wrap it up
