Normally I always like an Oprah pick. But this book was AWFUL. Over half of this book is a story line that is not relevant to the main character or her plight. It’s not until the last 30 or so pages that we find out about the situation back home that caused her to flee.

And the ending…just awful.

Was at a 3.75 until the very end. What a disappointing ending.

Plot was interesting but I didn't love the writing. All the characters felt flat and the ending was annoying. We went through all that for what?

Yeah... seriously not a fan of passive protagonists.

I hadn’t actually read Brooklyn before I read Long Island but it didn’t seem to matter too much. I was hooked immediately by intriguing characters. Toibin makes you work hard to understand their thoughts, desires and motivations, and I liked that. I was compelled by the story and every line felt important. I felt I wanted to take my time with each paragraph and consider what was unfolding, whilst at the same time feeling desperate to reach the end to know where the plot would lead. However, my only disappointment here **(spoiler alert)** was the cliff hanger ending. I was devastated and felt frustrated with the abrupt ending. Overall, a great read.
