This book is beautiful, Eleanor's voice throughout is so unique. I loved all of it until the last 5ish pages, hence the 4 stars.

But If you are looking for a paranormal book with answers as to what is causing the hauntings this is not for you. A lot of the paranormal activity is up to interpretation.

A classic for a reason, and definitely worth multiple read throughs. The comlexity of the character interactions and the effect they have at the happenings at the house are masterfully crafted.

I don't quite know what to think of it.
I started this book with the background of having seen the Netflix series, but now I think that may have been a mistake. The passages from the book that were included in the Netflix series were what drew me to the book (and they delivered), but I think what spoiled the "horror" of this story was that I kind of knew what would happen. Even though the series takes some big liberties from the book, the essence is still the same. However, some of that series knowledge also helped while reading.
The book (especially the conversations) were sometimes quite confusing when people started talking all over each other and about different topics.

The last few chapters, starting with the arrival of Mrs. Montague, were really good and had me the most interested in the story and the haunting.

It may have been a case of reading this book too late, but the prose is still amazing!

I already know I want to reread this at some point, and I'm excited to be able to pick up on more things with a second read. Really enjoyed this, solid vibes, very intriguing ending and what a great set of characters
