Another page turner! As Will, Sara, Amanda and Faith begin investigating a brutal rape and murder, it is discovered there are connections to past cases by Sara’s ex Jeffrey in Grant County. I really enjoyed the return of the characters from Grant County as the story alternated between the past and the present, while everyone strives to uncover the truth. As with any Slaughter book, it should come with a warning of the horrifically violent and graphic descriptions of the violence and abuse suffered by the victims, but I already can’t wait for the next!

The author did a nice job of closing out the chapter of Jeffrey and Sara while also evolving the story of Will and Sara. Looking forward to seeing where the story of Will and Sara goes from here.

This was a real page turner with a beautifully clever plot and just the right amount of foreshadowing. I especially loved how this new case brought up a case these characters did 8 years ago.

I stayed up nearly all night trying to finish and was sad when it was over. There’s an annoying, long winded confession at the end that makes me want to knock a star off but I’m settling in a 4 instead of a 4.25.

A few things:

1. This book has a few graphic scenes, though not more than other books by KS. I would describe it as dark-adjacent (it’s not dark-horror).

2. The graphic scenes are brutal crimes against women and may be triggering.

3. I have read a couple Sarah Lindin/Will Trent novels, but not all of them, and I had trouble keeping up and understanding their relationship (a side story) in this book. KS does try to recap and provide context but i still felt “out of the loop” like the new girl at the neighborhood party who has learned everyone’s names and their details (eg how many kids, pets) but still isn’t in the circle the way the long timers are.

4. The title for this book is all wrong

5. The authors note at the end made me think about her books in a whole other light

SUMMARY: There is a riot at a prison. While interviewing all the inmates, one insists he’s didn’t rape/kill and here’s the proof: there’s been a string of identical rape/murders while he’s been locked up, and there’s a serial killer/rapist on the loose.

At the same time as the riot, a girl is found raped/dead which makes the FBI (Will Trent) decide to look into it. His coroner girlfriend (Sarah) is on the case of the current female rape/murder victim.

Together they (and their work partners) start to investigate. Most of the story is whether not the guy did it and if he didn’t, who is the copycat? This new case also pulls up a lot of old history that’s painful for the characters.

In many ways this feels like a book 2 in a trilogy, but a good one! Not one succumbing to middle book syndrome.
