Another perfectly horrific Karin Slaughter book. Goddamn I love her.
Another perfectly horrific Karin Slaughter book. Goddamn I love her.
This is a series of books, this one happens to be Will Trent #10 but in all honesty, it is a stand alone book. How do I know? Becuase I read it on a recommendation of a friend without reading the past 9.
This book is set in two time lines. One from 8 years ago when the "cases" first started and also happened to be Sara's first husband on the case. The other time line is "current" which happens to be with Sara's boyfriend/fiance (if they can get on the same page).
The book is pretty fast paced, things eventually fall into place and when the author starts revealing the clues you're left slapping your forehead. Duh!
Fair warning though... There are parts of the book that are hard to read as a human, as a woman, as someone who has gone through trauma.
I liked a lot of the characters in the book... Will and his partner Faith, Sara is alright. I didn't like Jeffrey much. But they all meld together to make this book a good read.

I love this book for what it was… A crime thriller with strong female characters and a dose of a love story as well.
I received a free copy of the book from a giveaway. It is one of the best books I've read this year. Ms. Slaughter accurately captured the effects of traumatic and violent attacks on women, as well how families and friends are affected. I haven't read any of the other Will Trent books, but will be reading them very soon.
Nothing very original or compelling about this murder mystery. As the 10th book in a series, you really need to have read the other books to get the full understanding of the main characters' personalities and what happened to them in the past and how that affects them now, but you can piece it together enough - it's just not a complete picture. As for the mystery itself, it's pretty standard. There was probably too much forensic detail for my taste - it was overkill (pardon the expression) and sometimes just sort of gross and a bit gratuitous. I didn't really care about the main characters or any of their personal/emotional/romantic issues, but I finished the book solely to see "whodunnit." I have no interest in reading any of the other books in the series.

Karin out did herself with this story. It was one thing to give us a time line that included Jeffrey AND Will and Sara, but the depth of violence and emotion was on a whole other level. Karin placed us inside the hearts and minds of the women who suffered at the hands of a man. This wasn't a normal who-done-it novel. I loved and hated so much of it. A truly great story.
