We follow Daphne as she receives a letter to join a group of strangers and stay a few nights at the grand opening of a haunted hotel. During a game of murder in the dark someone dies… did they just fall or is it murder?

A festive Christmas who dun it, not much haunting goes on but a seance a tarot readings reveal truths behind closed doors.

Smooth read with some fun characters. Cozy festive book to sit with and drink a cup of coco.

I really enjoyed 'Murder at Maybridge Castle', even more than I expected. But who doesn’t love a cozy murder mystery? I really loved Daphne and Miss Thewley and Duke. They both were really strongly written and so witty. Loved it through and through, although I found the murder pretty obvious, I think it was really cleverly written and balanced the line of simplicity and mystery.

At least 100 pages could have been cut out of this book. Unremarkable.

this was a nice, simple, festive read to round out the year (though there wasn't much christmas mentioned in the book except for oranges with cloves lmao)

i liked:
- daphne and mrs thewley as an unlikely murderer-finding duo
- the side characters - they all had their unique traits that were important to the overall story
- the plot twist!

i did not like:
- the last few chapters - it felt very disjointed, like at one point i thought some pages were missing because it jumped from one thing to another.  the story would have been benefitted for some more fleshing out towards the end. i just don't understand why it wasn't.

special shoutout to my mum who bought me this book as a souvenir from her trip to london purely bc she knows i like murder mysteries <3

Slow to start and could have used a much better edit. For a light, quick mystery it’s ok, but there are definitely better ones out there.

I really enjoyed this book. The first 50ish pages I struggled - but after that the story picked up and I couldn’t put it down.

Was it a literary masterpiece? No.
Was it a fun whodunnit with a nice Christmassy vibe and nice characters? Yes.

This is a book that you should take for what it is, and not expect it to change your life.
I had fun with it and I definitely consider reading the other parts in the series (this is the 3rd book - I haven’t read any of the others, which I don’t think was necessary) if I am ever in need of a quick, enjoyable read that can also function as a palate cleanser.
