Loneliness, animal nature, and the pain of others come to great effect in “Judas Goat” (a horrifying trick the title introduced me to). I adored this and look forward to more work by Bates.

I’ve been thinking about these poems a lot in the weeks since I finished this book. They feel intimate to me, like they’re being whispered in my ear. Quiet, but not in the sense of softness. Rather, as haunted places are quiet. The way a forest can be quiet and beautiful even as something menacing might lurk unseen nearby. I definitely need to read this again.

I felt unusually alive while reading this…”in the dream in which I am a widow” is one of my favorite poems now

My favorites were "The Dog", "The Bridge", "Dear Birmingham", and "Salmon" the rest were all good but too intelligent for me I fear

Genuinely stunning, I was sold from the first poem. Interrogates animal-ness in ways I only dream of!!
