While this probably could be read as a first book of the set, I recommend reading the previous drizzt books to really get a sense of characters, backgrounds and connections. There is initially some recap woven in and some very familiar ground covered but it was quick and then on with it.
I really liked this one. There was some strange goings on with the companions and wasn't long before we were told what but enough time to try to figure it out on my own. Nice adventure and lots of fighting. The world connects and clashes with some great characters.
