Years ago I read the first 6 books of this series, and I had tried to read this 7th book in the series a couple of times, but never finished it. I am in a challenge that requires a spider on the cover, and I would say that this definitely fits that requirement, and I did finish the book.
I gave this a 3 star because there was just too much sword fighting in this one, there can be too much of a good thing.

I had a hard time enjoying a large portion of this - for personal reasons, not poor writing.
So Wulfgar and Catti-brie are supposed to get married, and before they even tie the knot they start having problems because Wulfgar starts acting like a misogynistic asshole. He doesn’t want Catti-brie adventuring or putting herself in any hint of danger, even though she’s proved time and again that she is a badass. Understandably Catti-brie is not on board with the plan.Later, Wulfgar’s overprotectiveness gets him killed. The death itself is brutal, but I wasn’t particularly sad for him. It’s just a shame because he had such incredible character growth throughout The Crystal Shard; this sort of erases all that.
Also, at this point, the whole hunt for Drizzt trope feels beat to death. Entreri’s one track minded quest just to battle Drizzt on even terms one last time feels tiresome. They barely know each other - bro, let it go.
Kind of a frustrating read, but not a bad book.

A fun romp which answers the question of the status of Drizzt’s family and their opinions on him. Spoiler alert they’re not great. Still though the book is a fun read though RA Salvatore makes some interesting decisions regarding romance and tackling misogyny (which while I was not expecting was not done too awfully for a book written in the 90s). Also this book answered the question I had when after reading Icewind Dale and then checking the wiki, I wasn’t even specifically looking for this btw, and noticing Drizzt and Catti-brie get married and just thinking to myself “Does R.A. Salvatore just kill Wulfgar in the next book or something” as a joke…. Yeah he just straight up does that. Honestly kind of like it better as long as you can ignore the fact Drizzt is like… 60 (and yes I am aware that still makes him a young adult as an elf BUT ITS STILL A LITTLE WEIRD).

My Opinion: Plot thickened and tension was kept well. While some things we got revealed to us via chapters from the perspectives of the antagonists, other things we were left to discover together with the heroes. The animosity thickening felt like Lord of the Ring scenes where groups of people were affected by it, getting more agitated, arguing. But, at the same time, it was different and very clever in its own way. It was nice returning to the deep underground.
I keep saying this, but this is some good classic fantasy. 5 out of 5, again.
