“‘I think it’s easier, in a way, when someone hurts you out of hate. Its less confusing. When the ones who hurt you are the people who love you the most… no one ever tells you how you’re supposed to deal with that.’” (315)
Both Stanley and Alvie went through so much and will probably continue to have their struggles but i loved seeing them both opening up and healing together.

I really enjoyed the premise of this book and the inclusion of characters with disabilities. The author does this right, because their disabilities are not a source of "inspiration" or pity, they are just things that the characters work through. That is an appropriate way to include characters with disabilities in literature. However, the plot starts to sort of sway and lose traction in the latter half, which made it hard to give a rating higher than 3 stars.
This was a really quick read. Although the plotline is a bit predictable & cookie-cutter, I was glued the story from beginning to end. I think the descriptions of sensory issues are done pretty well, especially the scene in the bathtub where the pressure of Alvie’s blankets over her head was comforting until suddenly becoming overwhelming. I love the motifs of animals, Rubik’s cube, and quantum mechanics throughout the story. The content is quite depressing, in general, but the occasional humorous moments do a good job of varying the cadence of the narration.
Although I like both Alvie and Stanley, I somehow feel that their characters aren’t all that complex outside of their respective conditions. Any extra complexity came from revealing their traumas to one another. I wish that their personalities were given some more dimension, especially Stanley, who really is just “nice” and not much else WRT his personality.
My favorite scene is Alvie’s fight with the boys outside the diner, when she channels her inner rabbit and kicks their asses.
