I found this one surprisingly tense for a (mainly) character-driven book. Loved the complexity and the depth of the characters which made them feel so real to me. Quite messy, but ain't life always?

Incredibly easy to read book. I bought it at Oxfam as I know it’s getting adapted for a tv show.

I previously read Normal People, so I was expecting some self destructive behaviour. What I really liked about this is how real everything is. Pining for someone you had, and you have, fully knowing that it’s not the right thing nor the right person. And yet there is always a cursed force bringing you back on that same destructive path.

Also I really liked the characters of Bobbi and Frances, they were so young and modern. The conversations that they were having are so normal for people of that age, same as the one they have with their friends group.

Was endometriosis, for Frances, just an allegory? Having something growing and stepping out of its place. Some sort of pain from the inside out, not only emotional but also physical. I’d like to read more about what people think of this correlation, if it’s even real.

4.5 because I'm being picky. The only reason it got that .5 star removed was because I didn't fully buy
Frances and Nick's
relationship. But this is a common theme with Sally Rooney is that there's a lot left unsaid and as we've seen with Normal People, you can see the relationship much more deeply on screen than on the pages. So that part is lacking... I guess I still don't understand why they love each other. Anyways, the entire book I was just thinking about how I am like 70% of Frances' good qualities and 30% of Bobbie's overall personality. Add up that math and I think that's me. As always, Sally Rooney does a really good job at talking about privilege and class, that's always really good, and I liked seeing Marianne pop up too. It was so easy to devour- the only thing was that I still don't understand why those two love each other, but, I also can't tell if that's part of the point.
