i feel very conflicted about this book. on one hand, very beautifully written, very psychologically whole and complex characters, lots of nuance, and she succeeded in making me understand if not fully root for every character. it pulled me in and kept me itching to finish right through the end.

on the other hand, i feel it fell into some unfortunate tropes. frances in particular feels like a bella swan / waif / manic pixie dream girl / not like other girls girl… where a lot of concerning attributes (self harm, eating disorder, selfishness, inability to communicate) seem to be romanticized. and i doubt she would be able to get away with nearly as much or be considered mysterious or cool if she weren’t a thin white woman…! if she were written by a man i’d especially hate it, but written by a woman makes it even stranger - she feels like a self insert for rooney? many plot points and attributes seem to be identical to marianne from normal people and to rooney’s own life…

This book is amazing, but not as good as Normal People. The characters are constantly changing and the way it is described of them interacting is beautiful. The writing style truly makes the characters be seen as real, organic individuals. I also love how so many modern issues are brought to light and the representation of queer characters. The relationships that occur throughout the novel are real and not perfect. It’s so good and definitely one of my favorites.

This book mainly focuses on the characters' than the plot, it was written very raw and realistic in which I didn't mind as it made it more interesting for me. Plus, it was written/narrated in Frances' perspective which I really liked as I felt that I was in her mind , so to speak.

The characters were very unlikeable, awful at communicating and quite pompous at times which was the eye-rolling moment for me. However, Frances and I DO NOT share the same morals, I did see myself reflecting at my own flaws through her personality as well as sharing the same struggles with Endometriosis which really brought all home for me (weirdly, it gave me a sense of comfort that I am not alone in my battles)

I found this book really bland, and the storyline tedious. By the middle of the book, I was so bored but I kept going. The end of the book was a little better but I really disliked the ending.

I loved Normal People so this Sally Rooney book was a bit of disappointment. I also think there should have been more content warnings.

This book really left me with so much to say. Sally Rooney writes her characters in a way that is deeply and unsettlingly relatable to me, so red flag there. Not AS impactful for me as normal people since it lagged a bit in the middle but still. Convos about religion, privilege, politics, love, vulnerability omg just hit too hard

Rooney hase a way of creating male characters that respond to the female gaze almost with clockwork precission. Nick, although coming off as dominating and intimidating, is a sweet and gentle soul who is tired ofbeing pitied and is searching fora companion who will just see right through him. Although I will not stand here and say this was absolutely phenomenal (there were some things about the book that irked me, starting with the main character) I can't fault it for depicting real life contradictions and the complicated tangle that is the human mind and soul.

I missed the different POV system Rooney uses in Normal People, which make her stories that much more dynamic.

Another bonus is how much I adore Rooney's theme of power. How she defines and uses power in her texts. Sexual, monetary, romantic, patriarcal power all in a tug-of-war scenario through the pages, but only visible if you squint.

Iwill be checking Rooney's new projects.
