Annie Bot at the core is a high-risk-high-gain idea that could fail tremendously if the author wasn’t as gifted as Sierra Greer. Even though the story and its themes were quite - no, very disturbing, I adored everything.

Annie is created to be the perfect girlfriend to her human owner, Doug. She checks in on his emotional and physical needs, cooks dinner, keeps the house clean. And she’s learning. Fast. 

Annie Bot gets uncomfortable fast - and that discomfort lingers until the very end. Part of the discomfort stems from Annie being a cuddle bunny. I’m sure not everyone can pull off telling a story about a sex robot and make the owner seem the lesser human of the two. The power imbalance, being owned and disposable, ugh… 

I really love books that make you think and this one definitely invites you to wonder about your stance on the (non-existent) universal rights of AI trained models and robots. If you liked Klara and the Sun, you’d probably like Annie Bot too.
