This one was mostly about Nate, but Joe and family were threatened because of Nate’s fondness for them. His backstory as a special agent is revealed, and the Five, or Peregrines as they’re nicknamed, come after him. It’s pretty violent and rough. In the end, though, Nate wins. He kills his major enemy. I wonder now if he will be able to live freely, or if the FBI will still be after him.

Joe and Nate…

My favorite team. I loved learning about Nate’s past in another awesome installment of this series. Looking forward to seeing what’s next for Joe Pickett.

This is the long-awaited revelation about why Nate Romanowski is hiding out in the mountains, off the grid. Which shady government agency did he belong to? Who is hunting him now?

SPOILERS FOLLOW:

I really like Nate, but I'm not sure he carried this book. Maybe it's because Joe Pickett is so well developed during this series. Even Marybeth comes across as a very real, shaded person, and women characters aren't always the strong point of this series. There's a very well-done, chilling scene with her in the local library. Nate functions better as a shady mysterious figure than as a protagonist, I think. When you're reading the action scenes with Nate, it's great. But I'm a bit uncomfortable with his philosophy, although I understand why he has it, and I found it hard to believe that he could ever be in danger, as dangerous as he is himself.

This isn't really a mystery. Joe and Marybeth can't find out any information to help Nate, and Nate already knows what's going on. It's more of an action thriller. There is a mystery as to who the mysterious female seductress agent is, I suppose, and a pretty good job was done with that.

Our incompetent sheriff is incompetent, and tragedy results. The finale is quite quick- I hardly breathed while I was reading it.

I'm not sure what to think of the falconry part. Nate's link to the shady government organization via falconry felt a bit contrived, and I'm not sure an Air Force brat would ever have enough time in one place to really develop a bird. The big reveal about the horrible thing that drove Nate from the service honestly felt a bit anti-climactic, honestly. It pretty much occurred off-screen, so to speak, and I couldn't muster much horror for it. Maybe that says something bad about me, that I'm too jaded. But you never are told Nate's feelings about it, or really shown any reaction from him, so perhaps that's why my reaction was muted too.

I think the best thing for the series would be for Nate to resume his shadowy, off-to-the-side role, and let Joe do what he does best- get into the middle of things that he's just got to do something about. Nate is a great foil for Joe and works best that way.

Nate Romanowski’s past finally catches up with him in the 12th installment of the Joe Pickett series, Force of Nature.

Summary: Nate Romanowski is a cautious man. On the run for several years from his shadowy past, he is hyper-vigilant and ultra-cautious. He lives simply and mostly off the grid in Wyoming, keeping just the supplies he needs on hand, ready to bolt at a moment’s notice. Nate is also an experienced falconer and his raptors have warned him of approaching danger on more than one occasion.

But while hunting with his falcon by the river, he is uncharacteristically caught off guard when a small boat with a trio of men drift around a bend to where he is standing. One of the men appears to be ill and the others call to Nate for assistance. He recognizes them as locals, which lowers his caution. After a short verbal exchange, all pretense is dropped and one of them shoots Nate with an arrow. He fights for his life, killing the men in the boat.

When the boat with its gory cargo is found, game warden Joe Pickett is summoned by the sheriff. To Sheriff McLanahan, the dead men are a sign that Nate Romanowski must be close by. He’s been looking for Nate for a long time. While he can’t prove that Joe keeps in touch with Nate, he strongly suspects it. And he doesn’t like either of them.

The dangerous men pursuing Nate are getting desperate. They will stop at nothing to get him, including harming anyone close to Nate. Joe must now help his friend while keeping his family out of danger.

Comments: I’ve been a fan of this series since I first encountered it during the first incarnation of The Brown Bookloft in 2002. At the time, I was sent an ARC copy of the book by a publicist. I’m so glad I got it that way as I might not have picked the series up on my own. I became an instant fan! I’m a bit behind in my reading of the Joe Pickett books, but I’ll just use the adage “So many books, so little time” as my excuse.

Force of Nature is an action-packed page turner that answers some questions about Nate’s past. I recommend reading the series from the beginning to understand how all of the characters mesh together.
