The premise of the conflict between Romanowski and Nemecek are pretty far fetched.  The concept of that high a level of personal and national betrayal are pretty over the top, along with no one else in the government being interested in Nemecek's actions and motivations (particularly when people are killing comrades.)  I like CJ Box's books because they explore government overreach and unintended consequences, but I can't recommend this one except for filling in the blanks about Romanowski's past.

Okay, this review is really about me, not him. I've read Box before and liked it so much more than I expected, when this new book showed up in front of my face, I said, "Okay, something different from my usual!" However, I really shouldn't have as soon as I saw "Special Forces Unit" on the blurb. I just can't care about military corruption or intrigue unless it's non-fiction, which this isn't. Joe Pickett, our hero, is truly a likable, interesting guy (and he's married to a librarian and the narrator has a clue about what real librarians are like!); that kept me going for a while. But heavy plot and action drama I just find boring (although I'd a give a film adaptation of his books a chance). Maybe the fact that most of the book was taken up with a military drop out who had few human qualities was what left me cold.

Another author talks about his latest hobby

Have read all the books in the series so far and one thing really sticks out - the author is writing about places he travels to and his hobby, probably because that way it becomes a business expense - tax write off. Series has gone away from a game warden balancing his job and family into a modern day thriller with government conspiracies, mysterious secret agents, and dumb ass cowboys - a definite drop in IQ but deliberate ramp up in action. Only thing missing is Mel Gibson and Danny Glover or maybe Bo and Luke Duke.
