Wonder Show

Beautifully done. The prose is lyrical without ever feeling over-written, the characters, particularly Portia, but most of the secondary characters too, are rich and complex (with the exception, I guess, of the villain, who is very evil). May not have broad appeal because it's not plot-driven at all - some of the chapters read like individual vignettes- but be a hit with the right audience.

I quite enjoyed this, but it felt too short.

Clunky writing and only minor mysteries are featured in this story of an abandoned girl who ends up working in a sideshow, slowly befriending the freaks. I was hoping for more connection to the magician in the circus part, but that didn't happen. Pretty tame and unlikely story for a 14 year old girl traveling with a sideshow.

not great, not horrible. felt superficial

I rarely see books like Wonder Show, because good writing combined with a plot that doesn't rely on romance is very rare. The writing, character development, and flow of this book was amazing! Highly recommended.

just not my bag of tea. a little too dark and depressing for me, but i can think of friends that might like it.

Great coming of age story! I loved everything about it!

This was actually pretty good. I would have loved it if the story was more fleshed out, but I think it was great the way it is. I really liked this story.

It was cute

Enticed by the cover, a Great Depression setting sealed the deal. However, the cover was the best part of the book, which took far too long to read, and the reader learns next to nothing about the time period save for what a Wonder Show was like. There were glimpses of greatness, like Barnaby's ability to draw me in immediately with a strong start, an ominous tone that made my gut tense, a phrase here or there worth reflecting upon. However, the rest of the book dragged on, with an unrealistic ending not properly developed, and it will leave no impact.
