Loved this book. Maddie is one of the most adorably relatable characters I have read in a long time. This book felt so real, and addressed tough topics, but never felt like it was trying too hard. Also funny and sweet. Would recommend.
Maddie is a young woman living at home, taking care of her father, who has Parkinson’s disease. She has a caregiver to help during the day, when she goes to her job as a PA at a theater, but at night it’s up to her to provide care. Her mother lives in Ghana most of the time, and her brother travels around the world with musicians. Needless to say, Maddie has grown up quickly, learning to take care of the household and her father, but it comes at a cost. Maddie hasn’t been able to grow in other ways by living on her own or with flatmate or dating much. After Maddie’s mother comes back to London for a year, Maddie decides to move out and finds a place close to work with two flat mates, Jo and Cam. She’s enjoying her new life and finally dating a few men, when an event at home shatters Maddie’s existence. There is a reason why Maddie is called Maame, a word in Twi meaning Woman. She is a brave, young woman figuring out life one piece at a time. Overall, an enjoyable read.
Some of these reviewers are really worked up about Maddie being a late bloomer lol
I personally appreciated the representation, especially when it comes to not experiencing certain things because of religious upbringing
The writing brought me right into Maddie’s world, and overall I found her character very endearing. Some parts were slow but overall it was a nice slice-of-life story about coming of age in your twenties (complimentary!)

4.5 stars.
I don't know why I thought I wouldn't like this book. But I had to read it for book club and I am so glad!! Because it was excellent! The characters were so real and it was full of not-excessive drama. A very page-turning read.

I’ve been on a lucky streak with great books. Maame had me laughing loudly at the Charlotte airport and sobbing quietly sitting in the middle between two women on the plane ride home. I resonated so much with MC’s identity as a parentified child. An amazing amazing debut.
