This has now become one of my favorite books. Capturing grief as a young woman while having to still grow up is a hard feat and this was done perfectly. Deeply relatable and personal, I loved reading this

3.5-4 for me. Good story, good characters, but so obviously a thinly-veiled autobiographical first novel that kinda dragged down in detail.
"I believe I asked you about how you felt about the name Maame?" Seconds tick by before I hear myself say, "I used to love it." "And now?' "Now, now I hate it." I give my brain time to process. "I think I hate what it means and what it's done to me." "What has it done to you?" "It made me grow up," I answer. "It made me grow up when I should have had more time. It made my dad over look me when I was a child. It made my mom leave me behind and my brother get away with doing the bare minimum. It made me lonely. It made me sad. It made me responsible and guilty. It made me someone if given the choice, I wouldn't want to be."
Maddie's journey as 'Maame' is one of resilience, as she grapples with depression, grief, and the overwhelming pressure of being the 'woman' her family has always relied on. After her father dies, we watch her leave this old life and specifically 'Maame' behind. As she grows, Maddie learns to set boundaries, stand up to her mother and brother, and, most importantly, prioritize her own needs. This powerful story captures the struggle of a young woman redefining her life on her own terms, learning that it's okay to be vulnerable, and finding the courage to put herself first for once.
I loved reading more about Maddie, watching her branch out into this new being. I also enjoyed her immense usage of Google (as if you don't do it on the reg).
Also, do yourself a favor and don't skimp on the acknowledgements.
