This book is such a lovely story about grief and depression/anxiety, and growing up, and having a hard time with parents but also having more compassion for them. I truly loved this one, it usually takes fantasy to get 5 stars from me, but this was just so good.

Charming and relatable coming-of-age story of a British Ghanaian woman in her 20s

Such a heartwarming and beautiful book. My only complaint is that Maddie’s naivety did get on my nerves sometimes. But that’s a me problem, not a writing problem.

It was an okay book but there were some themes around relationships with parents and parental death that made it a did not finish for me.

Maame reminds me of a few other books I’ve read recently about twenty something Black women in London making their way in the world. It’s likely all true but feels a little formulaic - struggling in the workplace, dating racist white guys, managing a difficult family. Maame was much the same but there was also real heart in her attempts to navigate responsibilities of caring for her sick father and dealing with a challenging mother. Overall, warm and sweet but nothing too distinctive really. Rounded up from 3.5 stars.
