In the end, the book turned out great! This is despite her spoiling things and the typos.

Silas is and will always be my favorite character. ❤️

I’ve been enjoying the book up until around 284. I don't get why the author doesn't let things unfold naturally instead of having the characters state the obvious. It's like she thinks we're blind and need everything spelled out for us. You know what I mean?

For example, there were these hints about Nathaniel possibly being gay. So I'm thinking, okay, something's gonna happen to give us a clear answer. But instead, out of nowhere, in the middle of some random scene, he just blurts out, "I like guys and girls," even though nobody even asked him. Like, why couldn't we figure that out on our own? It felt like the author was trying too hard to be culturally relevant or something, especially since it was only mentioned briefly before that.

And then there's this plan that gets messed up and the main characters get fooled. And guess what? The author literally goes, "Oh, you did this to trick us into doing that," as the characters weren’t being trapped at that very moment.

I guess this is what people mean when they say "show me, don't tell me,"

Will keep you updated once/if I finish this book. But I swear if she does this one more time, I’m gonna lose my shit.

“Looking down at him, her heart ached with a song that did not have words or notes or form, but strained nonetheless to be given a voice-a sensation that was not unlike suffering, for it seemed too great for her body to contain.”

After reading so very many mediocre books, it feels so amazing to truly enjoy what I'm reading! I just adored everything about this novel: the magic; the grimoires; our female heroine; the love interest; the villain, literally everything. I really feel that Margaret Rogerson has the potential to be one of my all-time favorite authors, and I look forward to anything and everything she writes in the future.

I have to admit that I'm quite disappointed that I didn't enjoy this book more than I did. The fact that Elisabeth works in a library with magic books instantly drew me in. The beginning was strong, and though some things were hazy (and continued to be throughout the entire book), I enjoyed the world building. Obviously I'm not the author so I don't get a final say in things, but I thought the plot was oddly paced and I genuinely felt like the story was over around 75% through. I appreciated that I couldn't necessarily guess what was going to come next; it just felt lopsided at points. The magic surrounding the books made almost no sense to me at all, and it was one of those upsetting moments in reading where you can't picture the scene the author is painting for you. And finally, the romance (thought it was obvious it was going to happen) felt like it was too rushed and the intimacy between the two came from little history. It was a fun book, but got muddled by confusing magic and a plot roller coaster.
