probably 3.5 stars, extremely funny at times, bloke doesn’t half go on though. wish they’d invented simple english in 1850
DNF. The story has an interesting premise, I'm not sure if it's because the writing and language is different from today, but I just couldn't get captivated in the story. I felt like it dragged on too much and it became a bore to read.

The book was an absolute pain to get through. While the overall plot was good enough and there was a satisfactory amount of okayish/likeable characters (Oliver, Mr. Brownlow, Rose, Nancy, etc), it was just not enough to make up for the terrible torture one has to go through to read it.
There are entire paragraph long sentences. It seems Charles Dickens is a master of punctuation but no one taught him the use of a full stop. The language was complicated for the sake of complication. I found myself invested in Oliver's story but had to fight against my worst half to read through and finish the book.

I remember watching countless tv and film adaptations of this book when I was younger, and the characters and story all came flooding back to me as I made my way through it. The book juggles so many interweaving plots and character relationships effortlessly and brings them all together to a tidy conclusion. The characters are memorable and have so much personality. Even those who only play a smaller role in the plot leave lasting impressions. It was a really fun book to read and one that had a meaningful message underneath it.

There's a bit of a contradiction in my heart with this book. When I think back on it two things jumped to mind: one is, how bored I was and how long this book felt, the other, a warm fuzzy feeling in my heart that says everything will be alright.
I feel this book is lacking in just about every way. The story, characters, theme, and setting all feel forced to show how bad the England of the time actually was. Nothing truly feels close a story. Likewise, all the "good" things that happen to Oliver are by pure chance alone. How does breaking into someone's house reveal them to be your aunt? None of it is probable, making the overall story, already quite boring and tedious mind you, flat out feel like a jumbled legend worth nothing in the modern day.
