Clive Barker's first book for children. Structured pretty traditionally, with an extra helping of menace. Good, but not fantastic.

I think that something is lost when a children’s book is read for the first time as an adult. I enjoyed this bizarre, creepy little dark childhood fantasy and wish I would have read it when I first really fell in love with the magic of books, around 3rd grade.
Part Alice in Wonderland, part Tim Burton, part Roald Dahl, part... maybe Stephen King at like 30% capacity, and if his target audience was 5th graders. Well-written and a good addition to my middle-grade library shelf. 3.5 stars as an adult first-timer, and if I had read this 30 years ago it probably would have been reread often as a gateway drug to grown-up scary stuff.

I read this forever ago in the 8th grade. It's still wonderful and so glad to have read it again. Thanks to the Goodreads forum that helped me find the name of this book from my past again.
Up until this point in time, CORALINE has been my favorite dark fantasy novel for young adults. THE THIEF OF ALWAYS has taken that spot. Such a stunning piece of writing--I literally gobbled the whole thing up in an hour and a half of time.
Thank you, CLIVE BARKER, for being a literary genius. This book is a must read for people of all ages. At any time. Why this hasn't been made into a movie yet is beyond me.
I am absolutely BLOWN away. Clive Barker for kids. Wow.
Even further convinced that his TEEN series, ABARAT, is just as astonishing. Cannot wait to delve into that world.
Clive Barker is a rare talent--the world should be very grateful for him. I know I am.
