The Enchanted Castle

E. Nesbit

How did I miss this author in my childhood reading and in reading to my children? This book is delightful as it follows two brothers and a sister, as well as a new friend on magical adventures at a nearby castle during their summer holidays. It is told by an unnamed story teller with some humor. It includes some real-world adult challenges including romance and money.

Nesbit was writing at the same time as J.M. Barrie and Beatrix Potter were writing. And she was an influence on many children's writers who followed.

I can find no indication that this has been made into a movie but I would love to see the Ugly-Wuglies animated!

fun classical children’s literature, worth a re-read.

Another enchanting tale from E. Nesbit. Listening to this audio book was extremely fun, though I did enjoy reading her last books out loud to the family I think almost more, despite the fact that I can't do any sort of accents at all, let alone funny voices for ugly wuglies.

This story, like Five Children and It, revolved around the adventures of a group of children and involved very similar, though certainly not dull, scrapes and fixes as the children explore the Enchanted Castle of the title and discover a magic ring. The ring provides them with ample ideas for fun, but as is often the case in Nesbit's work, gets the kids into rather more trouble than they wish for.

I love Nesbit's ablility to both evoke the naturalness of children's games yet at the same time allowing adults their fun as well. It is nostalgic and funny for adults, and at the same time, I think, perhaps only barring the old fashion language, still loads of fun for kids, who upon hearing that adults are beastly and can't grasp anything true, can only nod their heads and think to themselves, "right about that one."

A lovely enchanting story featuring some lovers, strange creatures called Ugly-Wuglies. Good ending.
