Luna & Me: The True Story of a Girl Who Lived in a Tree to Save a Forest by Jenny Sue Kostecki-Shaw

This is a moving book with great characterization (of both human and tree), lovely portrayal of a spiritual connection with nature, and introduction to direct action as a way to bring about change. Also banana slugs. My kids loved it. We recently passed by a tree with a blue X on it and they immediately became concerned that it would be cut down, which they learned from this book.

Great story about Julia Butterfly Hill who lived in a redwood tree for two years to protest the destruction and cutting down of the redwood tree. The illustrations are a stand out.

This book kinda sucks, but the pictures were gorgeous. I'm thinking that's why this book got on the LYRC list for this year.

A fictionalized semi-biographical picture book of the activist and her friends who camped out in a giant redwood for 2 years to save it from logging; she got the forest turned into a preserve. The fictional part is that Julia was 23, not a young girl, when she did this, and then there's the fact that the tree in the story is anthropomorphized and given thoughts! There are no sources given, other than a sanctuary forest website. Watercolor and color pencil illustrations are nice.

I enjoyed the story overall but the soft illustrations are what really drew me in.
