Beautiful Boy really impacted me when I read it in 10th grade, so it was nice to finally follow up with this side of the story. So raw – MAYBE too much, could use one more edit on the writing. Thanks to my friend Jason for lending this to me years ago and I'm sorry for never giving it back.

Fascinating...

A follow-up to his father, David Sheff's first novel, "A Beautiful Boy", Nic shares his side of the story of his addiction to crystal meth. This memoir is a vivid, graphic and very compelling glimpse into drug addiction, being high and all the drama that comes with it. The book begins with a relapse and progresses through a couple more attempts at rehab. I always thought that drug addiction was a personal choice but this story reminds me that life is tough and we are not all equipped with the will to cope with life's downs appropriately.

The story of Nic Sheff's addictions is sad and shocking at times (intentionally so, I think), but if you are looking for insight into what makes an addict do what they do, or a sympathetic narrator, you wont find it here.    Nic isn't a very likeable guy and I wonder if he realises how he comes across -  arrogant, entitled and pretentious.   His writing style is ... not great.   After the 40th "or whatever" I wanted to scream.   I may not have loved the book but I wish him the best and I hope he managed to stay clean.
