A fairly good book for an introduction into the concept of hauntology. Unfortuntaely, I felt that it focused on music, and a niche form of music at that, far too much. I found myself unable to connect to a lot of the ideas as I did not have the prerequisite knowledge of Jungle, Rave, and Triphop music. Naturally, the ideas came through, as Fisher is an incredible writer, but I felt a disconnect from the subjects that were explored. For my part, I would have preferred a more general approach to the concept of hauntology. Still, it was an interesting book, and helped to give me a framework to analyze how our futures are informed by our last pasts.

The parts with actual analysis are great. Unfortunately, long segments of the book are dedicated to describing music, which is always an incredibly futile task.

Fisher is always worth reading for the fascinating connections he makes between aspects of culture and the hypotheses he derives from those connections. This collection of old blog posts and short essays, however, is not among his most satisfying works. Interesting for those of us who grew up in the time of TV’s ‘Sapphire and Steel’, who idolized the band ‘Joy Division’, and who have a soft spot for Derrida’s ‘hauntology’, but I can’t imagine it saying much to anyone not having gone through that period.

An interesting, but unfocused read. Its core themes resonated with me but it was quite hard to find those themes in some of the articles.
Fisher lays out the core thesis quite well in the related lectures though so I recommend listening to those if you struggled to get the ideas here.
