Blech! The verbose oh God! Couldn't finish this.
Maybe it's because I'm trying to rush through this before my trip to Boston, although it is not a novel that should be rushed through, due to the appaling amount of description, but I believe, frankly, that it has more to do with sentences that, throughout the novel, are incredibly and, unfortunately, of greath length, and are, in quite a frequent manner, interrupted by several sentence fragments and commas which, to my dismay, make me forget the beginning of the sentence and what was happening.
Okay I need to practice my 19th century writing skillz.
I can usually deal with classics but this one was especially heavy. Which would have been okay if it had been more of an action or adventure type novel, more my style, like Jules Verne stuff and Dracula. But this I found pretty dull and confusing.
Soooo I skimmed through the last half and read the Wiki summary

A rather boring read. A novel from a different time period, which could affect the interest that it gives its audience. It's written in old English as well, which is also confusing about the book. Even then, the characters are very weird and the book feels off.
Loved it. Hawthorne's prose, albeit obviously archaic, adds a certain charm to the novel that immerses you in ye old days of pilgrim hats and the pompous righteousness of New England. Laughed out loud at many parts, particularly the descriptions of Mistress Hibbins.
