Totally by coincidence, I've read a few novels set in the golden age of Hollywood this year and The Seventh Veil of Salome is my favorite so far. However, I wanted more, and it's difficult for me to put my finger on what that is. It's fine, and great to read about the era partially from an underrepresented perspective.

Thank you, Del Rey and Netgalley, for an advance ebook in exchange for a fair review.

It’s weird how some books come to you at a time in your life when you can especially relate to them. Vera is a Hispanic movie star trying to make it big playing Salome. The story is told from the perspective of Vera and Salome during the time of Jesus. I love stories told in two periods. They both are the story of these women who want things in their life but there are barriers including patriarchy, culture, racism, and other women. At work now I am especially feeling some of these timeless barriers
emotional sad

For some reason I lacked emotional connection to the characters, unlike other SMG books I have read so far. For my taste it could have been longer, more epic, to reflect the scope of the biblical epic depicted here. Still, Moreno-Garcias ability to craft imperfect and realistic characters, and her aesthetic sense of space and time (I really felt I was in Golden Age Hollywood) is unmatched!

If you liked - or rightfully criticized - The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid, you definitely should read this book. At the same time it goes much deeper into intersections of sexism and anti-Mexican racism in Hollywood, while being not as overly reliant on trauma.

Also, I think readers who loved Yellowface by R.F. Kuang might want to read this book, too. It had a similarly despicable antagonist as a PoV, and discusses some of the themes around exoticization, envy, appropriation, and so forth. It'd be interesting to deep dive into a comparison of these two books! :)

This is such an amazing and grand premise that it seems almost impossible for it to live up to what it could have been. Liked it but didn’t love it. Ending was disappointing.
