A little different from SMG’s other stuff, but still amazing. Gives a Daisy Jones in old Hollywood but runs a tiny bit deeper. A great audio production on top of that
Alternates between Vera, Nancy, and Salome’s point of view and interviews in the late 90s/early 2000s with people who were involved making the film. The interviews foreshadow that the ending won’t be a happy one. 2 of the 3 women get an “ehh” ending, not what they truly wanted but do okay in life. The third woman gets a sadder ending but also survives the tragedy.
This was a highly intriguing read following the production of the famous dance of Salome set in 50’s Hollywood.
We see this story from multiple viewpoints including the actress set to play Salome the disgruntled extra Nancy whose anger over not being cast as Salome eats away at her and Salome who’s dance leads to a deadly outcome.
Garcia does a brilliant job showcasing the reality of 1950’s Hollywood including the blatant racism and discrimination BIPOC and women entertainers faced in the entertainment industry.
Additionally she provided a rich story about Salome and the various machinations that led her to that fateful dance and climactic moment.

I couldn't figure out who Salome was in present day for the longest time. I liked that aspect of trying to connect characters but it wasn't my favorite Moreno-Garcia.
Doing all three perspectives (documentary, Salome and Nancy/vera) was maybe a bit much - but the structure is my only real issue. Like all by Silvia Modena-Garcia, it’s more than worth a read. The romance is beautiful, the women are strong and face their battles with grace, I loved it
I’ve always been a huge fan of Silvia Moreno-Garcia’s writing. SMG completely leaves me in awe. She intertwined the Biblical myth of Salome with historical 1950s Old Hollywood beautifully. The story follows three characters: Salome, Nancy, and Vera (with the addition of other character perspectives sprinkled throughout the book). Despite Nancy and Vera’s timeline being centuries apart from Salome, SMG did a fantastic job in tying in their similarities. At the end, the reader can see how Vera was perfect for the role of Salome since she continues living without love. I am a Silvia Moreno-Garcia STAN and adore everything she does, and this book reinforced those feelings in me. I recommend this book to everyone!
