This is such a beautifully written book, it deals with heavy subjects like homophobia and lack of acceptance from parents but in a way that doesn’t bring you down, even through all there’s this element of hope carrying Julian, this sense of found family and love.
I think it does portray very well how Mexicans are (mostly) regarding toxic masculinity and colorism.
And then the romance was very well done too Julian and Matt were super cute together, and very realistic I think in how online relationships are more possible now than ever.
And the friends are the best! Lu specially was super funny.
And the narrator was outstanding!!!

what a cute queer romance! i don’t normally love long-distance romances, especially when they are in high school. but i found this one to be so cute and wholesome. i was really sitting here smiling and kicking my feet. jules and mat felt like a good match. jules did piss me off with some of his ignoring of mat. since they were long distance and mat had no idea if he was safe, i felt like that was extra cruel. but i can understand that some characters are just a bit more avoidant (but mat should still have been madder than he was haha. although it was sad that jules didn’t get into ucla, i appreciated that everything didn’t just perfectly pan out for them! he was able to still modify his dream to something that may have been an even better fit. his dad’s abuse was well incorporated to have an impact but not be the main focus. jules had so much love from his friends and other family members that ultimately became the focus! i am excited to read this author's future work.

heartfelt and (mostly) feel-good is how i would describe this book, though the romantic plot felt a bit unrealistic. on one hand, the book evokes feelings of nostalgia for that time in high school when you’re moving on and saying goodbyes and learning how to come into yourself, which is definitely the context in which this book should be enjoyed. on the other hand, and maybe this is because i’ve just moved on from that part of my life, everything felt a bit too idealistic and naive. though i can acknowledge that that’s part of the point of the book (or at least part of the perspective that i think the author is trying to capture), it took away somewhat from my own enjoyment of everything. the seeming lapse in realism (from major events that i hinted at before and even minor things like outdated/unrelatable teenage habits) contrasted with very relatable things that do exist in my daily life (like tiktok references), which made it harder to appreciate jules’ perspective on things. i just feel like i would’ve enjoyed this book a lot more when i was jules’ age, and though there’s nothing wrong with that, i wish i could enjoy it more right now. i did love that jules and his journey felt raw and real and comforting, even when it hurt.

aristotle & dante discover the secrets of the universe meets we are the ants!! this book made a habit of ripping my heart apart and then putting it back together. while a good bit of the story is lighthearted, it was much more intense and emotional than i expected. i loved every second though.
the imagery of the sun and moon, mat and luna, was EVERYTHING!!
this book is an instant fav!!
