For a long time I've wanted to read this book. Of course I'd heard about it and the out-sized ego - and skill - of the writer, but I still wasn't completely prepared. What Capote did that I find brilliant is that he removed himself from the narrative. His prose are still strong, even masterful, but it's all about the murderers, the victims, and the survivors. He researched every facet of the town and the journeying of Dick Hickok and Perry Smith.

Given that the outcome is known from page one, Capote still managed tension and suspense throughout the book. He still managed to make the protagonists, cold-blooded murderers, sympathetic. He still managed to make the final executions sorrowful. All the while he told a gripping story based completely in fact.

I'm happy I finally read this milestone book. I now have something to measure all crime stories against.

3.5 stars. I finished it!!! I was actually reading this for the book club and I'm glad I joined because I really liked this book! I didn't give it a 4 stars because the writing style was a bit weird as in I got lost sometimes. But that may be partially my fault since I do zone out quite a bit lmao. Anywho,, I liked this! It's also interesting knowing that all of this is real and it kind of was like a really long article. Yeah, that all I have to say.

This was initially a SNORE getting into. But it picks up quickly and gets going in ways I didn’t think of. Tragic and well-written.
