I love this subversion of the classic small town romance. It shows a love for the genre while demonstrating that sometimes you don’t have to uproot your life to find happiness

I liked this book better than People We Meet on Vacation but I liked it less than Beach Read. I thought Book Lovers was a pretty good read. I enjoyed the plot and all the references to the tropes of the small town romance and the Hallmark/Lifetime cheesy romance movies. I loved the relationship between Nora and Libby and enjoyed the development of them just being sisters to each other and letting one another go their own ways while still being extremely close.

I just was not a huge fan of the romance. I was not opposed, but I just feel like it was meh. It was lacking something, that fire, and it was hard to ignore the fact that it was absolutely instalove. They fall in love after a month, and they only started really dating on week 3. Then a WEEK LATER, they are exchanging “I love you’s.” It just kept bothering me and made me like the romance much less.

Also, I feel like Charlie’s character changed a huge amount and he never seemed as cold and rude as he was said to be except for the very beginning of the book when they had that meeting two years before. The character development was not really development, it felt almost like a personality switch. We don’t see him interacting with anyone else other than Nora so maybe he is a huge asshole to everyone but honestly it seemed like it was all bark and no bite. We kept being TOLD that he was mean and stuff but we didn’t REALLY see him being cold and standoffish.

Another thing I noticed was the similarities between Emily Henry’s books. I have read three so far and recognized similar scenes, so I started to get bored because it started to feel kind of repetitive. For example: in all three of her most recent books (including this book), the love interests confess their true feelings and have a dramatic love scene in a thunderstorm. Every single one. The whole formula was standing out to me a little too much because I was not too engrossed with the story, and it bothered me. It’s fine though because I do like this author and enjoy her writing style, but I just felt like some special piece was missing for me. That being said, I thoroughly enjoyed reading Book Lovers and obviously will continue to read this author’s future releases.

This romantic comedy is quirky, the banter is fabulous, and the characters are even better. I liked how the author worked in the small town and enemies to lovers tropes in this later in life story. Nora is a control freak and very neurotic, but a wildly successful working independent woman. Charlie's is a tough-as-nails editor with sarcastic humor and small-town charm. Throughout the story, they are like magnets, and any book lover will enjoy the puns, snarky commentary, and inspirational lines in this read. This book is a slow burn and a refreshing romance of two people who don't fit, fitting together perfectly. This book does have its steamy moments. I really enjoyed the characters, relationships, and descriptions in this book. The ending is surprising and not quite what I expected, but I enjoyed this read.
