Ward poses as an idiot to keep his father from killing him; after his father’s death, he, the family ghost (sort of), his brother, his father’s body servant (who swears when drunk that he’s the son of the king of the dwarves), and others have to find a way for him to regain his inheritance.

I liked this book in that it wasn't just your standard find yourself quest book. Ward is on a mission to prove himself competent after feigning stupidity to save his life from an abusive father. It becomes not only a mission to prove himself but one of finding himself as he strives to save the homeland he loves.

I enjoyed the story, the characters, the world build and the audio narration. I will definitely listen to book two.

I can't put my finger on exactly why I love this book so much, but for whatever reason I really truly do enjoy it. I wouldn't say it's spectacularly well written, and yet I find myself rereading it fairly often. I just love the characters and the world they're set in, and while it's a pretty short novel, it has a number of lines that stick with me ('the boneless grace of youth' and avoiding arguments by 'sliding away from their point like oatmeal from a spoon' being two of them). I wish the series was longer than two novels

Hm. It was okay, I think, but I didn't love it. A 3.5, so I'm waffling on where to put this.

It was interesting to read an early Patricia Briggs book and see how it's influenced her more recent Mercy Thompson books (but not the early ones!), which have a lot of stuff I don't like - such as needing to change points of view for a few chapters to explain what's going on in the rest of the world.

There were some side plots that were introduced quickly and resolved quickly at the end, which kind of made me wonder why they were introduced. I didn't fully buy Ward's acting shtick.

The relationship between all the Hurogs was interesting, but a little too left in the background.

Hm.

A great book that shined more towards the end then it did the other parts.
