I thought the first half of this book was standard YA, not good, not bad, but making me roll my eyes a little. However the second half really kicked things off. Meilin's growth/introspection was so interesting to see and I can't wait to see how it continues in the next book!

A retelling of mulan

She did not take her father’s place out of love but out of a desperate desire for freedom

I bought this book solely because of the gorgeous cover. Unfortunately the cover was the best part. This reads like a YA fantasy. So if that is your genre, this will be right up your alley.

I'm biased because I'm already such a fan of Mulan and any story where a girl has to disguise herself as a boy to survive or succeed. 5/5 stars because I loved everything about this book and I'm very excited for the sequel! I can't say anything else without spoiling stuff.

I’m sad, I just found this … boring. Love triangle was unnecessary and forced. Also felt that for the importance of the god jade aspect it should have been explained more thoroughly before the second book. Don’t know if I’m going to put myself through the second book yet; we shall see.
