The Death of the Necromancer by Martha Wells

I loved this book and this might need a five-star rating, but I felt it bogged down in the last quarter despite a strong finish. I was traveling and reading when very tired, so it might be my fault.

The good - interesting characters with a great setting. Bonus: A Holmes and Watson homage as adversaries of the main character. Does that make him a Moriarty? Perhaps a likeable Moriarty?

The bad - not a huge fan of the magic, but it lent to the story. As mentioned before, it bogged down for me.

I really really liked this one. Lots of good nuanced characters and a good interplay between them. Nothing like a murder mystery with a solid fantasy element!

Wonderful heist story, ahead of its time for the late 90s. Recommended.

(What is happening to my reviews? I'm going to open Goodreads sometime and find four almost identical reviews of this book. Fourth time's the charm:)
Another early Martha Wells, with a satisfying plot, interesting characters including some smart, strong women, and wonderfully-written action scenes (although I did find one too drawn out to entirely hold my attention). In 2024, the setting seems a little boringly eighteenth-century European standard, but I guess she's allowed to have one world like that.
