"Fölriadva a legérzéketlenebb alvásból, valamifajta lomszövet pókhálófonalait minden ébredésünkkel széttépjük."
"Annak agyát kergeti-e örülésbe olykor valamely zenei ütem titkos jelentése, mely azelőtt sohasem vonta magára figyelmét?"
"De szellemem betegesen érdeklődött minden jelentéktelen részlet iránt, s föltevést föltevésre halmoztam, hogy számot adjak magamnak a tévedésről, amit a számitásban elkövettem."

So the problem with Poe is that he uses too many words where he shouldn't, and he doesn't know how to convey in a paper human experiences. He has amazing and terrible imagination for horror and he's amazing at describing it. But he should have left human feelings, thoughts and experiences of inner lives alone. It's not for him. His descriptions of it are so out of sinc with what a person could actually describe feeling that it just destroys all atmosphere, until his horror and action brings it back up.

My Youtube chat about my love of Poe can be found here: https://youtu.be/UuggFRQIBOU (available from 13th July 2021)

If you don't like sharp things coming into very close contact with your personage... don't read this! It's chilling, claustrophobic, wicked, and wonderful!

A classic Poe story. The narrator demonstrates how strong the survival instinct is. Poe really delves into the senses that one one experience during an ordeal like this.... which is unsettling. This story made me anxious because I cannot imagine being in that torture chamber. Fuck that. So scary.

An easy to read, fundamental horror story by one of the greatest authors of the Penny Dreadful era of literature.
Captivating and quick, with great descriptions of a medieval torture chamber.
