The Human Division

I loved everything about this book! So happy the sequel is written and already in my hands!

Sarcastic, funny, and insightful, it's classic Scalzi.

The Human Division continues the story started in Old Man’s War where the Colonial Union decides to wage war on everyone. I truly love Scalzi writing style and this book does not disappoint, the structure being a little different, it has more in common with a collection of short stories than a full book. It is only after reading for a while that it is possible to see all the different stories coming together.

I find this way of storytelling refreshing and kept me interest in the different events and their outcome. There is no B stories here and all the different protagonist have an interesting arc. This book is a definitive must have if you love the universe created by Scalzi.

This was a pretty decent set of stories that moved a plot-line re: the relationships between Earth, the Colonial Union, and the Conclave forward. None of the stories were great but none of them were bad, either, with most of them ranging around 3.5 to 4 stars. Not all of them suited Scalzi's writing style, but even those were at least interesting. The intrigue was intriguing and the action was exciting, though there wasn't terribly much of it. The humor sometimes fell flat, though, but it usually worked. I think that the biggest shortcoming was that some of the characters were rather one-dimensional, particularly Wilson and Schmidt, who feature in the largest portion of the stories. And Wilson is a bit too competent to be given a silly, nearly carefree bungler's personality (or vice versa). Overall, though, I think that the collection of stories works well.

Well clearly I couldn't put this sucker down.
