I really wanted to like this series because I was such a big fan of the Red Queen series. But the pacing here is too slow for me, the story was just not that interesting to me. Valtik was the most interesting character and she had only maybe about 1 page worth of content in this 600 pages book. Erida and Taristan's story was actually not bad had the book explored more of their interactions and their influences over each other. I also listened through the audiobook version as well, and maybe the narrator somewhat ruined it for me because her stiff and exaggerated character tone and pitch did not do the characters justice.

I’m struggling with how to rate this. On one hand, this book was SO SLOW and I really struggled to get through most of it. On the other hand, the ending was exciting and it left me actually wanting to read the next book just to see what happens. I just wish the rest of the book was as fun as the ending…I can only hope the next book will be better.

it took me a long time to read this book, mostly because i was packing while trying to get read it. it was a bit of a slow start for me, mostly because it had been awhile since i read realm breaker so i forgot some of the characters and their significance. at times it did feel like some plot points were dragging. it picked up though and wow what a cliff hanger. cliff hangers are what victoria aveyard does best! it was fun getting to build on the characters more and get a smidge of romance. while most of the novel was political dealings, the last half was definitely much more action packed and thrilling! and certainly not what i was expecting!
