Oooh I loved this just as much as the first book.
Storywise there was a lot happening and lots of action, but also quiet character moments.
I love this group of people, it's just Andry who doesn't do anything for me. I also feel nothing about whatever is going on between him and Corayne. Corayne, tho, love the growth she went through. Also that scene with her mother. I needed that scene.
Dom and Sorasa on the other hand. THEY. They truly mean the world to me. Love their banter but also love the quiet moments, after that big moment for Sorasa, when she really needed someone to lean on. GOOD GOD.
Loved getting more of Sigil, Charlie, and of course Valtik (she gets underestimated so much but she's always there in the big moments, pulling strings and just being a badass bitch.)
My reread of book one made me really care about Erida. What I realized now is that I can only handle her in small doses and this book had just too much of her. Important stuff but good god. She truly has some banger lines, tho.
The ending shocked me. Cause, what in the world, do you mean?!?!?!?!
She has been so underused in this story, the moment she played a bigger part, this shit is happening to her??

"Maybe we belong to each other, we who belong nowhere"
This book mainly focuses on the steps towards the big finale, like finding allies, fighting smaller battles, planning, etc. However, it doesn't feel unnecessary or like a filler book. It all felt important even if the book itself felt a bit slower.
Another positive of this series so far, I was worried when the main FMC was 17 but I completely forgot that when reading because she doesn't act like a 17 year old. Also, she isn't a skilled fighter like some FMCs are and I think that makes her even more interesting.
All the other characters have really unique personalities and I love how each of them have important stories in their own way.
Very excited to read the last book!

This took me so long to finish. 3.5 rounded up. I don’t know if it’s the pacing or the style or what but man! I had to take several breaks throughout this story. I want to know how it ends but it will take me a while to keep reading I think.
As for the first book:
This is what happens when a cynical assassin and a cranky immortal prince have to work together to save the world while co-parenting a band of misfits 🫡

But add a bit of blooming teenage romance 💕, a lot of chaos 🌪️, a crazy-pants witch either playing hide and seek or delivering nonsensical comments with bones 🦴 , an extra dose of action and doom 🔥, and two petulant self-absorbed children with imperialism ambitions 🙄
I want to be like Sorasa Sarn when I grow up. She is my ride or die 💀

Maybe it’s because Empire is my favorite classic Star Wars movie, but I love a middle book where the good guys lose and are in a bad situation to start the 3rd and final book.
A solid read, although I don't appreciate the cliffhanger. That kind of writing irritates me.
This is definitely a second book - a bridge between with a lot of character development and traveling to and fro, gathering of allies... That manner of thing.
That said, I'm excited to read the third, whenever it appears. I want to see how the story ends!
The world is rich and detailed, with a good amount I'd like to see explored more (but wouldn't fit here - maybe "and also" books). The characters are fun - a good read.

I didn't hate this book, but I'm learning the epic fantasy quest genre is not really my thing, so I didn't love it.
Having closed one Spindle, Corayne and her crew are gaining some confidence about their ability to save the world, but Erida and Taristan put their undead army to work to stop them. In their attempt to assemble an army to rival Erida's, the crew crosses the realm facing dangerous creatures and assassins. Can the crew protect the realm, or will Erida and Taristan unleash What Waits and destroy it all?
I was really hoping that since the first book took a lot of time setting up world building and character introductions that this book would be more plot focused and faster paced, but it was still really slow paced. I am realizing though that this is intentional and characteristic of the genre. Despite the pacing issues, I did find that I was finally feeling invested in the characters. I especially love Erida, Dom, and Andry. I am also enjoying all the little romances happening in this series, but they are definitely less prominent parts of the plot than they were in her Red Queen series. Once again, Victoria Aveyard has manipulated me into falling for a truly cruel villain. When it comes to emotional manipulation, Aveyard is masterful. So, am I excited to read the last book? Not really. But I am invested enough that I need to find out how it ends. Aveyard has specifically said this book was an effort to create a Lord of the Rings style quest fantasy but with characters that more people can identify with (i.e., not just straight white males). So if you're a fan of Lord of the Rings, there's a solid chance you'll enjoy this series, but if slow paced epic adventures aren't for you, then maybe skip this one.
