Well... this wasn't Realm Breaker. I don't think I was expecting it to be, but after giving the first book five stars, I'm sad I wasn't left feeling even remotely the same way. I still love this world and these characters, but there were quite a few things that held this one back for me. For one thing, I read the first book way back in 2021, so my memories were fuzzy at best, and it took me awhile to find my feet and remember enough to track the events. This was also LONG. And I don't mind a long book... if there's a good reason for it. But the entire contents of this book could've easily been condensed into 100 pages, no losses.
There is a fine line between poetic writing and rambling, especially when it comes to fantasy books, and this one was really toeing it. I do enjoy poetic description, and the world that Victoria Aveyard has created here is truly fantastic and deserves some time to shine, but there comes a point when you've just gotta focus on moving the plot along. I also don't feel like I got to know the characters any better which is such a shame because I think there was great opportunity for that here. I can't put my finger on exactly what it was, but to me it just felt like the drive wasn't there anymore and any growth was stinted as a result.
TL;DR: I think that there was just so much more that could've been explored in this book, and a lack of action and character development caused the pacing and plot to suffer.
I will still be reading the final book in this series as I am very intrigued to see how in the world this will all wrap-up, but this book sadly wasn't my fave. Happy Reading :)

Erida and Taristan need to die already. Seriously, Taristan is so incredibly stupid. He's a puppet and really believes he's a king. I can't wait for him to drop dead. Both villains are so deeply deluded with belief in their own grandure that every time I have to hear from them, I hope this will be the time they die. Erida is a classic rich girl. I wanted to like her at first but she is such a rich bitch I can't stand her.
Corayne's story is wild in part because why, literally why, DIDN'T you learn to fight when your mother is the most feared pirate there is? Was there really not one person to teach you to stab things?
All this I am really just saying because I'm mad at how this book ended. I thought something was going to happen at the end and it didn't.I thought-wished-hoped Taristan was going to die by dragon and we could move on to the other big bad. But no! He's still alive! I just want him to die. His queen can go too. I'm very displeased by who died instead. I can't believe he'll still be alive in the next book. I can believe it but don't like it.
Voltik is perfect and can do no wrong.
