“Maybe we belong to each other, we who belong nowhere.” — Victoria Aveyard

i was surprised at how much more i like this book than the first one. usually sequels, especially in a planned trilogy, suffer from “second book syndrome” but this felt like there was more substance with this book and i found myself less confused by the world building than i was with realm breaker. i think that is partially to do with the significant amount of political and war planning that went into this book. i felt like a lot was cleared up. now that i felt like im more aquatinted with these characters i feel so much more connected to them. i loved seeing sorasa and dom’s character growth, and the scene with the assassins was badass. aveyard also writes such compelling villain characters with erida and taristan, i find their POVs to be fascinating. the ending made me cry, and it takes a lot for a book to bring me to tears. this is the epic adventure book i was looking for in the first book.

my biggest question is why is this considered YA? i feel that aveyards writing and world building in this series is much more advanced. is it because one of the characters is 17? i would argue there isn’t necessarily a single MC because many of them get an equal amount of POVs. i just feel like women authors often get lumped into YA when they really have no reason to be unless they fill it with smut and then have to be placed in adult. i feel like this deserves to be an adult fantasy.

An exciting adventure! I enjoyed the many different points of view and how they all tied together. This book kept me guessing at where it was going but it did not disappoint. I enjoyed the insight into the 'villains' aswell as the 'heros'. The world building in this is great and I over discovering more about the regions it visited and how they were different from eachother. With so many POVs each one managed to be distinct and I loved the interactions between them and how the relationships between the characters have been developed! Excited to discover what happens next!

Re-reading Realm Breaker and then immediately devouring this book has been a key part of my recovery from COVID. I will admit that I think I liked Realm Breaker a smidge better than this book, but I still yelled "VICTORIA" at the end of it and am now in agony waiting for the third installment.

Incredible, I loved it but that ending is a no because now I need the next book immediately and I don't have it

Despite overwhelming odds, Corayne an-Amarat and the Companions have closed the Spindle deep in the Ibalet desert. While they are bolstered by their victory, they are aware of the immense task ahead of them: close the remaining Spindles and defeat the evil god What Waits. But more immediate concerns are on the horizon. A fierce army approaches and the Companions have nowhere - and no time - to escape. Across the Ward, Ridha musters allies, but they too are beset by enemies, both ferocious and mysterious. As Taristan & Erida's army conquers nearby nations, they also seek other Spindles to open and horrors to unleash. The future of the Ward seems dire, but the Companions remain resolute: protect Corayne at all costs, for if she dies, the hope of the Ward perishes with her.

This book picks up immediately where the first book left off: the Companions are in trouble (as they usually are) and things feel hopeless (which is also typical). The author doesn't skip a beat in moving the plot forward and developing the characters. While Corayne is, in many ways, the main focus of the Companions, Andry, Dom, & Sorasa all have significant growth throughout the story. And while Corayne & Andry's developing relationship is adorable, the ways that Dom & Sorasa grow closer in this book was just **chef's kiss** The story itself was action-packed, keeping me on the edge of my seat until the very last page, which left me in anguish, waiting impatiently for the next installment!
