This book took so long to get through because the haunting was soooo slow to get good (was 75% of the way before a good scare) but when it was good, it was good. That being said, it wrapped up quickly (unsurprisingly because it took 3/4 of the book to really start) but I enjoyed the haunt!

Perfect for getting in the Halloween spirit!

This book was beautifully written and the story itself was utterly captivating! Can’t wait to read more of Darcy’s spooky tales!

Okay - it was a cheesy horror paperback. Classic Haunted House. But the suspense was better than Stephen King, and it ended basically as my happily ever after, and I appreciate that. A cozy, spooky read. I’ll definitely be picking up more by this author.

Actually 3.5 stars

Caring for her dying mother has left Adrienne broke and nearly homeless, until she learns of an inheritance left by her great-aunt Edith, the reportedly haunted family mansion, Ashburn House. Addy and her cat, Wolfgang, move in, and try to make the best of things... but Eleanor's creepy messages are carved throughout the house, and something is stalking Adrienne in the dark, wanting desperately to get in her house.

The Haunting of Ashburn House is very creepy and atmospheric, from the first page to the last. It feels very Gothic, despite Adrienne being a modern woman. The first half of the book moves a little slowly, but I like the sense of paranoia Coates creates in the earlier parts of the book, when Addy doesn't know if the creepy goings on at the house are real or her imagination. All in all, it's a very good horror novel.

This was just ok for me. An easy read but definitely not going to stand out as super memorable for me. I like the idea of this story and all the major plot points...but I think cozy horror is just never going to really work for me. I didnt really connect with the characters or get sucked into the story...nothing about this felt special to me. But I will probably still occasionally pick up books by Darcey Coates in search of one that ends up working for me.
