Spooky and has some nail biting moments. A fun read. Wolfgang is the best character
Read this one because I wanted to read a haunted house story. There were many things that irritated me in this book. Why have the day of the week be a plot point but never say what day it is? Why have the main character state she wants to be called Addy and then gave the narrator call her Adriane the whole time? It went fast enough, so it wasn’t too awful.
Despite several flaws that might bother me more in another genre, this book was surprisingly good. It was a bit slow to start with, and I was literally screaming at the character to make different life choices, but all in all this was a fun book to read.
The author did an excellent job of describing sounds, the house, and setting up the vibe and atmosphere. There was a moment in the book where my jaw literally dropped, I was so surprised at the directing the book went. This isn’t a typical haunted house book, so go into in with an open mind.
One of the biggest flaws was character development. Adrian was a completely blank slate. There was so much down time for the first 1/2 of the book that could have been peppered with flashbacks from her life that could give us a better sense of who she is as a person. All we know by the end of the book is all her family is dead, and she loves her cat Wolfgang, and also she considers random people her own age ‘friends’ after having met them once…
This is a fun atmospheric book to be read in October only, at night, in the dark, when you are alone. That way you set yourself up for the most enjoyable reading experience.

Excellent. Like Stephen King but without the "let's see how gross I can make it" factor. Highly recommend to horror fans, and non horror fans but just be wary. Definitely want to read more of her books.
slow-paced
Probably more of a 3.5 stars for me. This is more of a “cozy horror” than an actual horror novel. It was my first Darcy Coates book so I wasn’t sure what to expect. I don’t really know if I enjoy the writing style very much. I think it read a bit young adult sometimes with short sentences and over describing what Adrienne was doing. The first half of the book was VERY slow but picked up about 60-70% of the way through. I flew through it after that because things started happening and it was faster paced and intriguing. I really liked the main character, Adrienne and her cat Wolfgang. I would probably read more from this author if given the opportunity.
I’m so glad I finally picked up a Darcy Coates book! This was everything I wanted it to be. Creepy, haunted, inherited house. Paranormal happenings. Fun and freaky gore.
The only thing I didn’t love was some of the dialogue didn’t feel natural, it felt forced. And maybe that was just a me thing.
I recommend if you like locational, paranormal horror!

I want to reread this immediately. But first, need to buy all of Darcy Coates books.
I have a lot of thoughts on this book and I wish one of my friends had read it so I could talk to them about it (someone read it and come discuss it with me!!) The creepy tone is set from the very beginning of the book. Sometimes it can be slow building, but I felt myself hesitant to start every new chapter because I was convinced something bad was lurking just around the corner. Without giving it away, something happened in the middle of the book that kind of turned me off and I was a little disappointed. I continued on though and was satisfied by the ending and was glad I finished it. Overall, very creepy. Maybe not as many ghosts as you’d anticipate for a book with “haunting” in its title. Not super scary, not very gory, just enough scares IMO.
Inheriting Ashburn House couldn’t have come at a better time from Adrianne. The site of a brutal murder, she moves in with $20, her cat, and all her possessions fitting into one suitcase. Her Great Aunt Edith had strange notes written all over the house and an attic full of candles. Rumors of ghost have surrounded the house for years and the longer Adrianne lives there, the more she is starting to believe the rumors.
This book was CREEPY!! It is definitely a horror book that has some gross descriptions. To me, this book isn’t as much a ghost story as it is about an undead character. This book will make you scared of sundown and mirrors. Overall, I give this book 3/5⭐️
