DID NOT FINISH

DNF @ page 73.

Nothing really wrong with this, though it's definitely not the best by Darcy Coates). It just didn't really grab me (or maybe I wasn't in the mood), I set it down, and now can't remember enough of the backstory to really care to pick it back up.

“Ashburn’s dead are not at rest”.
I don’t read a lot of horror novels, but it’s ~spooky season~, so here I am. I loved the authors writing in this book, I liked the characters, loved Wolfgang, but felt like it should’ve been advertised as more of an “undead” book than a “haunting” book. It was pretty slow, but I think it worked well for this story! The author did an incredible job describing certain characters and events, and I actually shuttered twice while reading because it freaked me out. With that being said, I really liked the book and definitely recommend to all suspense and horror fans.

*** 3.5 STARS ***

I've only read a handful of horror books in my life and I feel like The Haunting of Ashburn House was perfect for someone like me who's only just beginning to get into this genre. I really liked Darcy Coates's writing style and this was an easy and quick read. It wasn't too dark but still managed to give me goosebumps sometimes. However, there were a few things that I thought were a bit too predictable and some problems felt like they were solved too easily which is why I deducted a few stars.

Terrifying and Gripping

A chilling story of what goes bump in the night. I finished this in less than I day as I so drawn in to the story of Ashburn House. Handfuls of little mysteries pile up to create a disturbing story that one woman struggles to find a way to live through.
It was terrifying, well written, and enjoyable.

Review of The Haunting of Ashburn House
By: Darcy Coates
Freelance writer Adrienne has inherited a large estate from her Great Aunt Edith, a woman she has never met.  Unfortunately, there is something strange about the house and there are many rumors about the house being haunted.  Unfortunately, it is starting to look like the rumors might be true and that Edith might have murdered her family.
This was okay and I didn’t hate Adrienne, just found her annoying at times and dumb.  My biggest gripe is she didn’t figure out how the candle would be helpful, especially since Edith basically told her to do that.  We didn’t enough time with the other characters for me to form a strong opinion, but they did feel cliché with personalities that felt just like characters from any small-town story.  I adored Wolfgang the cat. The author spent too much time on mundane details of her routine.  NOS4A2 and Imaginary were long, but we didn't get a play by play of what they were doing.  If we got Victoria McQueen or Charles Manx pouring it would because they were revealing something important or it was relevant to the plot.Writing the is good with some beautiful descriptions of the setting.  I don’t know if the implication of it being a ghost story was to hide the twist, but it’s technically not a ghost story.

I am an absolute sucker for a good ghost story and this is a pretty good one! Addy inherits an isolated mansion from a previously unknown eccentric great aunt upon her death. This could not have happened at a better time as she has $20 in her bank account and no home of her own. Addy and her cat Wolfgang move into Ashburn House and weirdness ensues.

I enjoyed the main character—she didn’t drive me TOO crazy with poor choices(WHY ARE YOU STILL IN THE OBVIOUSLY HAUNTED HOUSE?!?!). The creepy level was just right for me. Overall, I recommend!
