This might be a book but it will paint visuals in your head that will replay for the rest of your life. I could easily see this as a movie, well no, not easily. I would need all the lights on.

4.5 out of 5 stars

I might be among the unpopular crowd in this case. This book started very strong. And I was enjoying it for a while even though the main character kept on doing stupid things. I will never go to a house without knowing anything about it. That too without a phone or anything to contact the outside world. I would rather be homeless, but I know that's not how things work in horror stories. So I was ignoring those things. But what made me laugh is when she took the time to bake a cake for someone when she was broke and had nearly nothing to eat. Even that is fine. But the story really got lagged after the first half of the book. I skimmed the last 100 pages, and I didn't get scared. The twist was pretty solid, but otherwise, I didn't like it.

Twist is very predictable, explanation is kind of funny.  Still,I enjoyed the book. It's like a wish fulfillment - you own a home, you live alone in the forest and everyone is nice.

I found this book to be disappointing. First, the story is pretty dang slow, following the protagonist around through small, menial tasks. And despite the story centering around Addie, you learn almost nothing about her personality or anything much about her, which made her fall flat as a character. The antagonist/monster reveal was disappointing as well - it wasn't a ghost story, but more of an undead situation. The buildup and suspense to the reveal was well done.

This is the second book I’ve read by Darcy Coates and as I said before, she is slowly becoming one of my favorite horror authors.

The Haunting Of Ashburn House is a wonderfully eerie story. I loved the all too familiar atmosphere of the classic, old, looming house secluded from the small town below and I loved the uneasy tension that would build up as the slightly naive protagonist  discovered the homes mysteries, quite literally carved into the walls. While this book is chalk full of classic haunted house tropes (one of which had me rolling my eyes), it still remains delightfully original.

Listen, Coates isn’t trying to redefine or break new ground in the horror genre here. Her writing isn’t flowery, but extremely fluid which makes her stories easy to digest. This is what I would call comfort horror. I’ll be grabbing way more of her books to read in-between all the other horror novels that bend my mind and wrench my stomach. There is nothing quite like reading a classic haunted house story under a dim candle light.
