This classic was nothing like what I expected. I felt like I was fed an expectation for a romantic love story upon a cold, unforgiving landscape. Whilst the setting part was true this was not a love story and I was blind sighted by the direction it took.
Hands down, my favourite part of the book was the morose yearning between Heathcliff and Catherine. Nobody writes soul wrenching pining like Emily Brontë and I ate it up.
This book is a cornerstone of romanticism with the sublime workshop of nature and super dramatic dialogue. I love books from the romantic movement and so I enjoyed my time with it. I will say this book really made you work for it, I was super confused at a lot of different parts and they didn’t spoon feed you information like in more modern books. I think frequent confusion, feeling like the middle dragged on and unmet expectations meant this book probably won’t be an all time favourite.
I think this book would have changed my personality (for the worse) if I read this in my adolescence before my brain had fully developed. I know it in my bones 17 year old me would have been a Heathcliff apologist so I’m happy I waited to read this so I could recognise the toxicity of all the main characters.
This was a sad and twisted novel about the pursuit of revenge. If you want to read an OG miscommunication trope where all the characters are unlikeable then this is for you.

In this house we acknowledge Hareton as lowkey the best and most heart-wrenching character in this book

Challenging to read to the older language. The story is completely tragic. Fueled with anger and revenge. It is frustrating. The passion and love is undeniable.
