I spent a lot of 2023 in my fantasy-era and this year vowed to return to sci-fi books. Though I haven't been too great at holding myself accountable, I did see this book as an opportunity to say I at least tried. Man, am I happy I picked this up. I was so pleasantly surprised by The Principle of Moments and found myself in awe that this was not only a debut novel, but one from such a young author.
A lot of the sci-fi I have been reading has been mostly dystopian/utopian/post apocalyptic, which I enjoy, but as a Star Wars fan, I've been craving a space adventure and that's exactly what I got with this novel. With time-travel, but also more fantastical elements of a prophecy resetting again, I found it highly addictive.
Running across two timelines, there are some historical elements that aren't accurate in the 1820 something timeline (but I had to be made aware of this by a buddy because I simply hadn't noticed). That didn't take away from my enjoyment of the book however. I liked this, a lot. Everything from the characters, to the found family elements, the soulmate trope and powers beyond. The space hopping, the ships and crews, the fact that Asha is a tech-whizz, and and and.
With some questions answered, but a whole lot more posed at the end of book 1, I'm itching to see how the story continues.

There are elements to love in this book. There is a lot going on. All the time. Sometimes it's a little overwhelming how much is going on. It feels ambitious. There were parts of the book I was totally gripped and then elements that were taking themselves too seriously. Asha and her upbringing was gripping. I didn't care as much about what was going on in London once obi wasn't there.
And I felt their third hero was a little under formed.
But it got to the end and I kind of want to know what happens next. So, as a book, it works I suppose.

The issue for me is that I read this during a pretty heavy slump and while I really enjoyed the space travel aspects and the time hopping, parts of the book really dragged on for me. It was engaging enough to keep pushing through and I did enjoy the characters, it’s honestly just a me thing when it comes to how I felt about it. I’m interested to see where it goes from here.
4.5/5 stars.
I absolutely adored this book. If I am going to be completely honest, it took me a minute to get into it but once I read the prologue and began to understand the set up, I was transported, and I couldn't put it down. Time and space travel was a little daunting in this book, but it was so well done! The parallels between the past and present were beautifully done and helped me understand the plot. The characters were so well written and imperfectly perfect. This universe is so intriguing and I can't wait for the rest of the series to follow!
