I sooo badly wanted to like this, but it completely lost me around two-thirds of the way through and I ended up skimming the rest (I probably should have DNF’ed).

This was a sci-fi/fantasy space opera epic with two main POVs. The first POV, Asha, is set in 6066, where humans are subjugated and she is suddenly torn from her world following her mum’s kidnapping. (This really annoyed me, but the description of the book says it’s the 60th century - surely it should be the 61st?!)

The second is set in 1812, where Obi is in love with a king-to-be and getting over the trauma of being abandoned as a child by his dad.

Personally, I found the different worlds and POVs jarring, and the regency vibes just didn’t fit. I felt like the book was trying to be way too many things at once.

There was a lot going on, and unfortunately the writing felt a bit too juvenile to convey it in a digestible way. That being said, it is still a debut written at 16 years old, so there’s great potential there.

I liked the characters (although Asha felt a bit like a Mary Sue), and especially liked Obi and George’s relationship.

I’m not a big fan of prophecy-related plots either, and this was definitively a central theme.

Ultimately, I got too fed up with the disjointed pacing and world building to invest in the characters towards the last half of the book, and for that reason I won’t be reading on.

I really didn’t jive with the narrative style. I was confused, and not in an “oh I’m so excited to find this stuff out!” way. In order to keep me engaged the pace would have had to be much slower and taken time to build characters and stuff to ground me in this world, and I was not particularly grounded. Maybe I’ll pick this up again later when I have the patience for it but who knows.

update: this book has put me in a lil reading slump. this is probably closer to a 5 star read than a 4

"'Speak,' said the planet to her children. 'And name yourself.'
'I name myself Sensit,' the man of clay replied. 'For the river that cuts.'
'I name myself Dandeyi,' the one of quartz replied. 'For the mountain that rules.'
'And I name myself Adesola,' said the woman of obsidian. 'For the shadows that protect. For the darkness that conceals.'"

This took me a fairly long time (for me at least) to get through this, which certainly meant I got lost at certain elements towards the end, but I enjoyed this. The world felt quite lived in, but I was drawn to the "clinicalness" of it too. A story full of love and hope in the darkest of times, I'm looking forward to the next instalment in this series.
